Assessing FEMA

Anyone who knows me well knows that my dream job is to be a regional director at FEMA. That does not mean however that I do not identify areas where the agency falls short. By definition, FEMA is a reactive organization. Whether this is due to policy or just decades of culture the problem still stands that until a disaster happens, the agency is in a holding pattern waiting and preparing.

Preparation is fine but I believe prevention is even better. So how can we prevent some of the common disasters that FEMA responds to? Well for starters we have to acknowledge climate change.
Notice I did not say you have to believe in climate change, quite frankly our individual beliefs are insignificant when the truth is data shows storms are becoming more frequent and more violent. The world around us is changing and unless we change our mindset we cannot change our ability to respond and react.
